Paris Saint-Germain have been handed a significant setback ahead of their crucial UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich, with key defender Achraf Hakimi ruled out due to injury.
The European champions confirmed on Wednesday that Hakimi has sustained a right thigh injury that will sideline him for the next few weeks, ruling him out of the decisive return leg in Munich on May 6. PSG head into the clash with a narrow 5–4 aggregate lead, but the absence of one of their most influential players poses a major challenge for manager Luis Enrique.
Hakimi’s injury appears to have worsened during the closing stages of Tuesday’s first leg in Paris, where he was seen struggling but continued playing as PSG had already used all their substitutions. His determination highlighted his importance to the team, but it has now come at a cost during a critical stage of the season.
Widely regarded as one of the best attacking full-backs in world football, Hakimi’s pace, creativity, and defensive work rate have been central to PSG’s system. His absence will not only affect the team’s defensive solidity but also reduce their attacking width, particularly in transition play where he is most dangerous.
With limited options available, 20-year-old midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery is expected to step in at right-back. While talented, the positional shift will test the youngster’s adaptability in what is likely to be a high-intensity encounter at the Allianz Arena.
PSG have also confirmed that backup goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier will miss the trip to Germany due to injury, further complicating squad selection.
Beyond club concerns, Hakimi’s injury has sparked uncertainty regarding his availability for the upcoming FIFA World Cup with Morocco national team. Although the club has not indicated a long-term issue, the timing raises questions about whether he will regain full fitness ahead of the tournament.
Despite the setbacks, PSG remain in a strong position in the tie, holding a slender advantage from an entertaining first leg. However, facing Bayern Munich away from home without a key player like Hakimi adds another layer of difficulty to an already finely balanced contest.
All eyes will now be on how Luis Enrique reshapes his side for the decisive clash, as PSG aim to protect their lead and secure a place in the Champions League final.
