A non-governmental organization, Oduduwa Women Advocacy Initiative(OWAI), has called on the police to do a comprehensive investigation into the incident Ibadan stampede.
Also, the group cautioned the Police should focus on investigation into the cause of the incident that saw 35 children die, rather than intimidating the organisers.
A statement signed by the President for the initiative, Erelu Modupe Martins on Monday made available to journalists in Akure, Ondo State, noted that the need to focus on the cause of the incident is germaine.
The group, which is dedicated to championing the rights of women and children, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede, describing it as heartbreaking.
Condoling the family of the victims, Erelu Martins said “this moment is profoundly tragic for our nation, as no parent wishes to face such unimaginable loss.”
She, therefore, urged authorities to approach the situation with care and sensitivity.
Erelu Martins said: “The intentions behind organizing this event were noble, and it is crucial that this tragedy does not dissuade others from contributing positively to our society during the festive season.
“Arresting and detaining the organizers is not a constructive response from law enforcement agency. Such actions may tarnish their reputation and discourage future charitable endeavours by other well-meaning Nigerians.”
The organization, further called upon the police to prioritize the welfare of the injured children currently receiving medical care.
The statement reads further, “Additionally, we support the ongoing investigation by the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, which should involve discussions with the event organizers, the Wings Foundation, and Agidigbo FM, to better understand the circumstances that led to this unfortunate incident.
“We also echo the sentiments expressed by President Bola Tinubu, who has conveyed his profound sadness over the tragedy and has urged the Oyo State government to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
“We support his call for a thorough review of safety protocols for public events, particularly those involving children, to ensure their protection.
“As Nigeria faces significant economic challenges, it is vital that we do not allow this incident to deter generous individuals from extending their support to those in need.
“As a charitable organization, we remain committed to assisting Nigerians in navigating the economic difficulties many families are experiencing.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this incredibly difficult time. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may the parents who are mourning find strength and solace in the face of their unimaginable loss.”
