Bremen Unfazed As Boniface Drought Reaches 12 Games

Akin Ayomide

Werder Bremen have brushed aside concerns over Victor Boniface’s alarming goal drought, which has now stretched to 12 matches, by celebrating the Super Eagles striker on social media following their latest victory.

After Bremen’s win on Saturday, the club took to Instagram on Sunday to post a joint celebration with Boniface, featuring clips of him celebrating with goalscorer Marco Grull from the game.

“POV: When life is a carrot,” they wrote in the lighthearted post.

It is the kind of caption Victor Boniface has been known for in his time in professional football, and his club’s use of it shows they are not worried their striker isn’t scoring the goals yet. The 24-year-old forward’s barren run has now extended to eight months, with his last goal coming in a March defeat to Bochum whilst still at parent club Bayer Leverkusen.

Boniface failed to find the net in his first club start for Bremen against Union Berlin, playing 85 minutes but registering just one shot on target and completing only one dribble from five attempts.

His struggles represent a dramatic fall from grace after an explosive debut season at Leverkusen, where he tallied 14 goals and nine assists. His output dropped significantly in the 2024/25 campaign, finishing with just 10 goal involvements across 19 league games.

This season has seen him largely deployed as a substitute, registering just one assist across his first five appearances off the bench.

The goal drought extends to the international stage, where Boniface is yet to score a competitive goal for the Super Eagles since his debut in 2023. His previous season was severely disrupted by an adductor injury sustained in January that ruled him out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite the concerning statistics, Bremen’s public backing suggests they remain confident the striker can rediscover his clinical touch.
