Sporting activities may soon take another dimension in Ondo State as Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa Promises to build a new stadium and upgrade the existing Akure Sports Stadium to international standard.

The governor made the promise on Saturday after the Olympics Day Run at Akure Sports Stadium.
He said the state government would continue to prioritise sports in the scheme of things and pay attention to the welfare of athletes in the state.
Represented by his Deputy, Mr Olayide Adelami, the governor said: “Sports is very dear to our hearts in Ondo State and our administration will not relent in its efforts to engage the people in sporting activities for health benefits and as a chosen career to gainfully employ the youth.”
Aiyedatiwa, who described sports as a good avenue for social interaction and integration among youths in the state and country at large, he disclosed that efforts were also ongoing to ensure that work commenced at the new stadium site in Akure.
He said: “The contract for the upgrading of Akure township stadium has been awarded by the state government to a reputable contractor to make the facilities meet international standards for the use of the sports loving people of Ondo state.
“Other stadia in Ondo, Ikare and Ile Oluji will also be awarded soon to meet the yearnings and aspiration of the people.
“Efforts are going on to award the contract of the new stadium at Araromi in Akure to de centralise the over stretching of facilities at the Ondo State Sports Complex and to enhance sports development in the state.
“Our administration will continue to give necessary priority to sports.”
The state Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Saka Yusuf Ogunleye in his address said: “The extension of the event to Ondo State is a clear indication that sports promote global peace.
“It’s the commitment of to prioritise sports and engage the youths meaningful through sporting activities. Sports facilities are upgraded all over the state.
“Ondo State athletes are able to compete with their counterpart outside the state and winning laurels thereby representing Nigeria in international competitions.”
Representative of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Mr Sylvester Ikuejamoye, noted that sport keeps the mind and body strong and healthy.
