The Lagos State Government has dismissed a report by Sahara Reporters alleging that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was ordered to resign on health grounds, describing the claim as entirely false.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, said no one had asked Sanwo-Olu to resign, insisting that the governor remains healthy and fully in charge of the affairs of the state.
Akosile said, “This report is false in its entirety. Nobody has asked the Lagos Governor to resign. Governor Sanwo-Olu remains in good health, of sound mind, and is actively discharging his duties as Governor of Lagos State.”
He also disclosed that the Governor earlier received Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, who paid him a courtesy visit to formally notify him of his intention to contest for governor.
According to the statement, the meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere.
The rebuttal followed an exclusive report by Sahara Reporters which claimed that Sanwo-Olu had been directed to step down on health grounds, with Hamzat expected to assume office and complete the current tenure.
The online platform also alleged that the purported arrangement could position Hamzat as a leading contender for a fresh four-year term in the 2027 governorship election.
Sahara Reporters further claimed that unnamed sources within the Presidency said President Bola Tinubu and members of his inner circle were dissatisfied with the current leadership in Lagos and were considering a political transition plan.
However, the Lagos government rejected the claims, accusing the platform of spreading false information and attempting to mislead the public.
Akosile said the clarification became necessary to reassure residents and prevent the spread of misinformation.
He urged Lagosians and the general public to disregard the report and treat it as fake news.
