Real Madrid have suffered a major setback in their pursuit of the La Liga title after confirming that both Éder Militão and Arda Güler will miss the remainder of the season through injury.
The Spanish giants, already facing an uphill battle to catch FC Barcelona at the top of the table, were dealt the double blow on Thursday. The club announced that Militão is sidelined with a left thigh injury, while Güler is recovering from a similar issue affecting his right thigh.
According to reports in Spanish media, both players are expected to be out for several weeks, effectively ruling them out of the final six matches of the campaign. Crucially, this includes the highly anticipated El Clásico showdown against Barcelona on May 10, a fixture widely seen as decisive in the title race.
Militão’s absence is particularly damaging for Madrid’s defensive stability. The Brazilian centre back has been a key figure at the back, and his leadership will be sorely missed as the team navigates a critical phase of the season. His injury adds to ongoing defensive concerns, forcing manager Alvaro Arbeloa to reshuffle his backline at a time when consistency is vital.
Meanwhile, Güler’s setback is another frustrating chapter in what has been a stop start season for the young Turkish playmaker. The 21 year old has shown flashes of brilliance when fit, offering creativity and attacking spark, but injuries have limited his opportunities to make a sustained impact.
With six games remaining, Real Madrid now trail Barcelona by nine points, leaving little margin for error. The title race, their only realistic chance of securing major silverware this season is slipping further out of reach as squad depth is tested.
Despite the setback, there is some relief for both club and country. Neither Militão nor Güler is expected to miss the upcoming FIFA World Cup finals, scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
For now, Real Madrid must regroup quickly. With the pressure mounting and time running out, Arbeloa’s side will need near perfect results and perhaps a slip from Barcelona to keep their fading title hopes alive.
