Ramadan: Sanwo-Olu Urges Nigerians To Pray For Peace, Stability

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for peaceful elections, greater youth participation, and sustained interfaith harmony as he joined Muslim faithful for a Special Ramadan Prayer at the Lagos House Mosque Ground, Ikeja.

The event, held on Tuesday, drew religious leaders, Islamic scholars, members of the State Executive Council, and prominent leaders of the Muslim community.

Addressing worshippers at the commencement of the holy month, Sanwo-Olu described Ramadan as a period of deep reflection, not only for individuals but also for those in positions of public trust.

“For us in public service, Ramadan deepens our consciousness of accountability, not only to the people we serve but ultimately to Almighty Allah,” he said.

“True leadership is measured not by power but by compassion; not by authority but by service,” Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, added.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and social welfare, pledging sustained support for vulnerable residents, youth empowerment initiatives, and programmes designed to promote peace across communities in Lagos.

“As a government, we remain committed to policies and programmes that uplift the vulnerable, support families, create opportunities for our youths, and ensure peace in our communities,” he said, stressing that no segment of society would be left behind.

Highlighting Lagos’ religious and cultural diversity as a source of strength, Sanwo-Olu urged residents to use the Ramadan period to pray for unity and stability in both the state and the country.

With the nation approaching another electoral cycle and the state entering the final full year of his administration, the governor appealed for restraint and peaceful conduct ahead of the polls.

“Pray that Allah grants our people wisdom as they exercise their civic duties,” he said, adding, “May the choices we make strengthen good governance, protect our diversity, and secure a prosperous future for all who call Lagos home.”

He also charged religious and community leaders to guide young people toward responsible citizenship and encourage eligible youths to register and participate peacefully in the democratic process.

“When our youths are engaged constructively, we strengthen our democracy and secure a more stable and prosperous society,” he said.

Earlier, in a lecture titled “Ramadan: Building Faith, Character and God-Conscious Living,” Sheikh Dr Qasim Ajape emphasised that the essence of the holy month is to cultivate faith, character, and God-conscious living among believers.

“Faith without character is nothing,” he said, urging worshippers to remain grateful to Almighty Allah for the opportunity to witness another Ramadan.

Special prayers were led by the Grand Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Sulaiman Abou Nolla, who prayed for peace, prosperity, and stability in Lagos State and across Nigeria.
