Ogun Councillors Mobilise For Tinubu, Back Abiodun’s Senatorial Bid

Fatimah Otunsanya

No fewer than 102 councillors from the nine local government areas of Ogun East Senatorial District on Wednesday declared their support for the second-term bid of President Bola Tinubu as well as the reported 2027 senatorial aspiration of Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The endorsement, which took place in Itoro, Ijebu Ode, was moved by the Chairman of the Ogun State Councillors’ Forum, Hon Akindele Faseyi, and seconded by Babalola Emmanuel.

The forum cited Abiodun’s “unmatched developmental strides” and “qualitative leadership” as the major reasons for the endorsement.

The councillors emphasised that Abiodun’s administration has transformed the state in areas such as infrastructure, healthcare, economic development, and security.

They noted that his experience in governance makes him well-positioned to represent Ogun East at the National Assembly.

Faseyi said, “We have observed the transformative leadership of His Excellency over the last seven years. His ‘Building Our Future Together’ agenda has impacted positively across Ogun East.

“We believe that a leader of his calibre should continue to serve at the federal level in order to attract more dividends of democracy to our people.

“Consider the airport project; Ogun State can now boast of its own airport. There will be an influx of travellers, boosting not only the economy of the Iperu and Ilishan axis where the airport is located but the entire state.”

The councillors assured the governor of their readiness to mobilise support for his aspiration and his possible emergence as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

Speaking at the event, the member representing Ijebu Federal Constituency, Femi Ogunbanwo, also supported the position of the councillors, describing Abiodun as a committed democrat.

“Our amiable governor deserves to serve in the Senate after completing his tenure as governor. He has a strong track record and has allowed opposition parties to operate freely in the state. His achievements are unparalleled. I commend this body for taking what I consider the right decision,” Ogunbanwo said.

The lawmaker also moved the motion endorsing the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which was unanimously supported by the councillors.

However, Abiodun has yet to officially declare his intention to contest for the Ogun East senatorial seat currently occupied by Senator Gbenga Daniel.
