The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has announced the appointment of Bala Mohammed as its new national chairman.
The development followed the resignation of Ajuji Ahmed, who had served in an acting capacity since March 2024.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, said Ahmed recently defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Johnson described Mohammed, a former national organising secretary of the party, as “an astute administrator” from Kaduna.
He said the new chairman brings “a wealth of experience, tactical brilliance, and unwavering commitment to the party’s grassroots ideology” to the role.
The party also raised concerns over what it described as an “assault on democracy” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We are witnessing a coordinated assault on the foundations of our democracy,” the statement reads.
The NNPP cited “sponsored internal crises, spurious legal challenges, and democratic erosion” as major threats to the political system.
It added that Mohammed’s emergence was strategic in light of the current political environment.
According to the party, the new chairman is expected to strengthen internal structures and position the NNPP ahead of the next elections.
“Our democracy is under attack, but the NNPP remains a sanctuary for the hopes of the common man,” the party said.
The party expressed confidence in its leadership, stating it is well positioned to “offer Nigerians the governance they truly deserve” as preparations for the elections intensify.
