NASU, SSANU to begin nationwide strike over unpaid wages, Monday

-Deborah Akinyosoye

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in universities, including the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has instructed its members to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike starting Monday due to the non-payment of four months’ withheld salaries.

The strike, according to leadership of both unions, is scheduled to begin on the night of Sunday, October 27, 2024.

In a circular addressed to all branch chairmen of NASU and SSANU within universities and inter-university centers, titled “Latest Development Regarding the Withheld Four (4) Months’ Salaries,” JAC explained that the strike, initially planned for October 23, was rescheduled to accommodate a Trade Group Council meeting of NASU branches set for that date.

The circular, signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, NASU General Secretary, and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU President, clarified that the change in timing was intended for efficient coordination and to ensure both unions were aligned.

JAC expressed regret that, despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval for 50 percent payment of the withheld salaries, the Finance Ministry’s delayed response has raised doubts about the government’s commitment to resolving the issue.

The circular stated, “JAC of NASU and SSANU has issued several notices to the government requesting a resolution to this issue, but the government’s commitment remains uncertain.

“The Trade Group Council Meeting of NASU branches in Universities and Inter-University Centers is set to take place on Wednesday, October 23, and Thursday, October 24, 2024, at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, with arrangements already finalized.

“In light of this, JAC leadership has decided to move the effective strike date to midnight on Sunday, October 27, 2024, allowing NASU branch officers to be in place before initiating the strike.

“We had to make this strategic adjustment for better coordination and to ensure unity between both unions.

“We deeply appreciate your continued commitment to our leadership, and we reaffirm our resolve to continue this struggle until we secure a decisive victory.”
