Messi Calls World Cup Triumph ‘The Best Of All’

Akin Ayomide

Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi says lifting the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina remains the pinnacle of his career, even as he continues to chase new achievements on the pitch.

Speaking at the America Business Summit in Miami on Wednesday, Messi said reflection on his legacy will come only after retirement, which he noted is still some years away.

Messi, who has a contract with Inter Miami through 2028, said he is focused on enjoying his football rather than looking back on past milestones.

“It’s not something I’ve thought about or worried about,” he said. “When I retire, I’ll value everything I did in my career more. But today is the time to keep playing and keep enjoying myself.”

The World Cup champion and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner headlined the event’s first day, appearing after speakers including former U.S. President Donald Trump, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

He was interviewed by Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who presented him with a ceremonial key to the city.

Messi praised the warm reception he has received since arriving in Miami last year. “The affection of the people from the first day was impressive,” he said. “I’m very grateful.”

When asked about leading Argentina to their first World Cup title since 1986, Messi said the triumph marked the highest point in his career. “As a player, winning the World Cup is the best,” he said. “After the World Cup, you can’t ask for anything more.”

Messi joined Inter Miami midway through 2023, won the MLS MVP award last season, and is a leading candidate to retain the honour this year. He and Inter Miami will host Nashville SC on Saturday in a decisive Game 3 of their first-round playoff series in Fort Lauderdale.
