Lagos Flags Off 2025 Hajj With Inaugural Flight Of 388 Pilgrims To Saudi Arabia

Deborah Akinyosoye

Lagos State has commenced the airlift of its 2025 Hajj pilgrims with 388 individuals departing for Saudi Arabia on Monday, May 12.

The inaugural flight took off from the Pilgrims and Cargo Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, aboard a FLYNAS Airbus A330-300, flight number XY8410, at 5:42 p.m. Nigerian time.

Of the 388 pilgrims, 167 are male and 221 are female. Dignitaries present to see them off included the Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs and Amir-ul-Hajj, Ibrahim Layode; the National Commissioner for Operations at the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Prince Anofiu Olanrewaju Elegushi; and members of the 2025 Hajj Central Working Committee.

Speaking at the airport, Layode urged the pilgrims to focus on their spiritual duties and perform all rites as prescribed.

He noted that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr. Kadri Hamzat, has shown consistent concern for the comfort and well-being of pilgrims. He cited the provision of medical screenings in 10 centres across the state as part of preparations to ensure the pilgrims were fit for the journey.

Layode also encouraged the pilgrims to obey Saudi Arabian laws and represent Lagos State and Nigeria responsibly during their time in the Kingdom.

Elegushi congratulated the departing pilgrims and said that NAHCON, working with state boards and other stakeholders, is aiming to deliver an improved Hajj experience this year.

Also addressing the pilgrims, Board Secretary AbdulHakeem Ajomagberin urged them to maintain discipline and avoid any conduct that could harm the state or national image. He reminded them to stay away from prohibited items and follow all regulations. The airlift is scheduled to continue on Tuesday, May 13. There will be a pause on Wednesday, May 14, with the final flight expected to depart on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
