Lagos Blackouts Imminent As TCN Begins 25-day Powerline Upgrade

Olayiwola Matthew

Electricity consumers in Lagos State should expect daily power disruptions over the next three weeks as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) begins a critical infrastructure upgrade on one of its major power lines.

According to a statement by the TCN on X, the company will carry out maintenance work on the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line between July 28 and August 21, 2025, with daily activity scheduled from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The upgrade, which has been approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the National Independent System Operator (NISO), involves the installation of an Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) fibre cable. TCN says the installation is vital to fully operationalise the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, a key tool for monitoring and managing Nigeria’s power grid in real time.

To minimise disruptions, TCN says the line will be restored after each day’s work, and other circuits will remain in operation. Still, the company warns that “intermittent outages” and load shedding are expected during the maintenance period.

Lagos’s two electricity distribution companies — Ikeja Electric and Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) — have notified customers of the likely impact.

In a public notice on X, Ikeja Electric stated: “Customers may experience intermittent power supply and load shedding across our network due to the planned TCN outage.”

EKEDC issued a similar advisory, noting that the project would affect supply “across our network coverage” during the daily maintenance window.
