Kogi Condemns Attack On Orphanage, Rescues 15 Abducted Pupils

The Kogi State Government has condemned the attack on an orphanage and school facility in Zariagi, along the Kabba Junction axis of Lokoja, confirming the rescue of 15 abducted pupils.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, described the incident as a serious security breach and raised concerns over the operation of unregistered institutions in vulnerable locations.

According to the government, the facility, identified as Dahallukitab Group of School, was allegedly operating illegally in a remote, bushy area without registration or the knowledge of relevant authorities and security agencies.

“The Kogi State Government has received reports of a security breach at an unregistered orphanage and school facility located in an isolated area of Zariagi,” the statement said.

The attack occurred late on April 26, 2026, when suspected gunmen reportedly stormed the premises, abducting 23 pupils and the wife of the proprietor.

Fanwo disclosed that security agencies, led by the Nigeria Police Force in Kogi State and supported by other operatives, responded swiftly to the situation.

“Their prompt and coordinated response led to the successful rescue of 15 of the abducted pupils, while intensive operations are ongoing to secure the safe return of the remaining victims and apprehend the perpetrators,” he stated.

The government commended the efforts of security personnel, noting that their professionalism and gallantry were instrumental in limiting the impact of the attack.

“The Kogi State Government commends the gallantry, professionalism, and swift response of the Police and other security agencies for rising decisively to the occasion,” the statement added.

While assuring that efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining victims, the government warned against operating schools and orphanages in isolated areas without proper registration.

“It is important to stress that the operation of orphanages, schools, and similar institutions in isolated and vulnerable locations, without proper registration and notification to relevant authorities, poses serious security risks,” Fanwo said.

He urged operators of such facilities to comply with regulatory requirements and engage with appropriate government agencies for proper oversight and security assessment.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring residents that security operations remain active and that further updates would be provided as necessary.
