Florentino Pérez has confirmed he will stand again for the presidency of Real Madrid after officially calling club elections on Tuesday, insisting he has no intention of stepping down despite growing frustration among supporters following another disappointing campaign.
“I am not going to resign,” the 79-year-old declared during a tense press conference held near the end of a season that will see Madrid finish without major silverware for a second consecutive year.
The announcement comes at a difficult moment for the Spanish giants, whose struggles on both domestic and European fronts have intensified scrutiny on the club’s leadership, squad, and coaching setup.
Real Madrid’s hopes of salvaging the season suffered a major blow on Sunday when fierce rivals FC Barcelona secured a 2–0 victory in El Clásico at Camp Nou. The result not only handed Barcelona bragging rights but also confirmed back-to-back La Liga titles for the Catalan club with three games still remaining.
Madrid’s European campaign also ended in disappointment after a quarter-final elimination at the hands of Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League. The early exit marked another frustrating chapter for a club that measures success primarily through continental dominance.
Pressure has also mounted around the team’s internal atmosphere. Reports in Spanish media have suggested growing tensions within the dressing room, including multiple training-ground disagreements. One alleged altercation reportedly resulted in midfielder Federico Valverde requiring hospital treatment, although the club has not publicly addressed the claims.
Adding to the unrest, sections of the fanbase have turned their frustration toward star forward Kylian Mbappé. The French attacker, who arrived amid enormous expectations, has faced criticism over what supporters perceive as inconsistent performances and a lack of commitment during key moments of the season.
Managerial uncertainty has further complicated matters at the Santiago Bernabéu. Current head coach Álvaro Arbeloa, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January, is not expected to remain in charge beyond the current campaign. Reports linking former Madrid boss José Mourinho with a sensational return have only added to speculation about the club’s future direction.
Despite the mounting criticism, Perez remains determined to continue leading the club he has overseen through one of the most successful periods in modern football history. Under his presidency, Real Madrid have won multiple Champions League titles and established themselves as a global commercial powerhouse.
However, with Barcelona regaining domestic dominance and tensions rising within the squad, the upcoming elections could represent a defining moment for the future of the club.
As the season draws to a close, attention will now shift toward major decisions regarding the coaching staff, player departures, and possible summer signings, with supporters demanding a swift response to restore Madrid to the summit of European football.
