Ghana President Receives Chieftaincy Title In Ile-Ife

Fatimah Otunsanya

The President of Ghana, Dr. John Mahama, has been honoured with the chieftaincy title of Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, in recognition of his efforts in promoting African unity and regional cooperation.

The ceremony took place in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Monday.

Speaking shortly after the investiture, Mahama emphasised the importance of fostering harmony between Nigeria and Ghana, and called for continued engagement with countries in the Sahel region, where civilian administrations have been overthrown by military interventions.

He urged West African nations not to ostracise Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, but rather encourage their return to the Economic Community of West African States.

As the Governor and I acknowledged him, our sub-regions are facing challenges. Three of our members have decided to break away and form the AES. I believe instead of ostracising them, we must build a bridge between ECOWAS and our brothers in the Sahel, because our destinies are tied together,” Mahama said.

On Nigeria-Ghana relations, Mahama described President Bola Tinubu as “an elder brother” and a long-time friend

He highlighted the shared history and cultural links between the two countries, noting that some people in Ghana trace their origins to Ile-Ife. He dedicated his chieftaincy to Tinubu, praising the Nigerian leader’s friendship and support over the years.

The event was attended by prominent figures, including Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote; Osun State Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi; Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Adesuyi Haastrup; Oloffa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamonsi; and the Ovation Magazine publisher, Dele Momodu.

In his remarks, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, through his deputy, Kola Adewusi, commended the Ooni for honouring Mahama, describing the Ghanaian leader as a tireless mediator committed to conflict resolution and democratic consolidation.

He particularly noted Mahama’s engagement with ECOWAS and Sahel region leaders as a landmark effort to preserve regional stability.

Oba Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, lauded Mahama as a symbol of African unity, cultural continuity, and economic reform. He recalled Mahama’s longstanding relationship with the palace, predating the current recognition, and acknowledged his consistent support for Ile-Ife and its royal institution.
