Former Chelsea, Spain Defender Azpilicueta Retires

Former Chelsea FC captain César Azpilicueta has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the season, bringing the curtain down on a distinguished career that spanned nearly two decades at the highest level of the game.

The 36-year-old defender, currently playing for Sevilla FC, confirmed the decision on Friday through an emotional message shared on social media.

“After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life,” Azpilicueta wrote.
“I’m grateful for every moment: the wins, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way.”

His final appearance is expected to come on Saturday when Sevilla travel to face RC Celta de Vigo in what will mark the closing chapter of a remarkable football journey.

Azpilicueta began his professional career with CA Osasuna before earning a move to Olympique de Marseille, where he quickly established himself as one of Europe’s most reliable young defenders. His performances in France attracted the attention of Chelsea, who signed him in 2012.

What followed was one of the most successful periods in Chelsea’s modern history. Over more than a decade at Stamford Bridge, Azpilicueta became a symbol of consistency, professionalism, and leadership. Initially deployed as a right-back, he adapted seamlessly across the defensive line, excelling as a centre-back and left-back whenever required.

His versatility and tactical intelligence made him indispensable under multiple managers, including José Mourinho, Antonio Conte, and Thomas Tuchel.

During his time with Chelsea, Azpilicueta won virtually every major club honour available, including two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the Europa League, the FA Cup, the League Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup. He eventually succeeded John Terry as club captain, leading the team during one of its most transitional periods.

One of the defining moments of his career came in 2021 when he captained Chelsea to Champions League glory, defeating Manchester City in the final.

On the international stage, Azpilicueta earned 44 caps for Spain national football team, representing his country at major tournaments and contributing his trademark reliability and experience.

After leaving Chelsea in 2023, he joined Atlético Madrid before moving to Sevilla last summer for the final chapter of his career.

Widely respected for his humility, discipline, and professionalism, Azpilicueta leaves the game as one of the most dependable defenders of his generation. Though never the flashiest player, his consistency and leadership earned admiration from teammates, coaches, and supporters across Europe.

As he prepares for retirement, tributes have continued to pour in from across the football world, celebrating a player whose career was defined not only by trophies, but also by dedication, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to his teams.
