FG Warns Against Illegal Recruitment Of Nigerians Into Foreign Conflicts

Fatimah Otunsanya

The Federal Government of Nigeria has raised concerns over the rising cases of Nigerian citizens being recruited illegally to participate in foreign armed conflicts.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the government said investigations indicate that some Nigerians are being lured with promises of lucrative jobs, security roles, educational opportunities, or migration incentives, only to be deployed to combat zones under misleading circumstances.

This came after the news from Ukraine about two Nigerian citizens killed while fighting for Russia.

Recruiters allegedly offer high salaries, signing bonuses, and fast-tracked citizenship to entice victims, sometimes requiring them to sign contracts in foreign languages without proper legal guidance. Travel documents are reportedly confiscated upon arrival in some cases. Reports also suggest intermediaries or agents facilitate travel arrangements under tourist or other non-military visa categories.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria unequivocally warns all citizens against engaging in or accepting any offer that involves participation in foreign armed conflicts. Such actions endanger lives and may violate Nigerian and international laws governing mercenary activities and foreign enlistment,” the statement said.

The Ministry added that Nigerians who participate in foreign conflicts outside approved government frameworks do so at their own risk.

To address the issue, the government said it is working with domestic and international partners to investigate these developments and increase public awareness. Nigerian Missions abroad have been instructed to strengthen consular vigilance and provide timely advisories to citizens.

Parents, guardians, community leaders, and educational institutions were urged to educate young Nigerians about the risks associated with deceptive recruitment schemes. Citizens are advised to verify overseas employment or study opportunities through official government channels and report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
