Family of Slain NURTW Leader ‘Arikuyeri’ Speaks on Mile 12 Cult Killing

…Cries for Justice, Not Revenge

Lagos, Nigeria — The grieving family of Lawal Sulaimon Onaolapo, popularly known as Arikuyeri, has broken their silence following his brutal killing during a violent clash in Lagos, appealing for calm and justice instead of revenge.

In a press statement signed by Mr. Rafiu Lawal on behalf of the family, they described the murder of their son on August 28, 2022, as heartbreaking, but urged the public not to retaliate.

“We, the family of Lawal Sulaimon Onaolapo alias Arikuyeri, are deeply heartbroken over the brutal murder of our beloved son in broad daylight.

“This tragedy has left us in deep pain, but we appeal to everyone, friends, relatives, and the public to remain calm. We strongly urge against any act of revenge or violence. What we need now is peace, justice, and unity, not further bloodshed,” the family said.

The family also called on security agencies to urgently investigate the killing and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice, while appreciating the love and support shown to them during this difficult time.

Arikuyeri, a prominent National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) chieftain and leader at the Mile 12 motor park, was reportedly macheted to death by suspected cultists during a supremacy battle that escalated into gunfire between rival groups.

The violent clash threw the Mile 12 area into chaos as residents fled for safety.

Lagos Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the tragic development, assuring the public that calm had been restored.

“One person died but normalcy has been restored. Police are on the ground,” Hundeyin said.

The family of the slain union leader further appealed to community leaders, youths, and religious institutions to continue speaking against cultism and violence, warning that unchecked attacks threaten the peace and stability of communities.
The death of Arikuyeri has once again raised concerns over the recurring link between cult-related violence and transport union supremacy battles in Lagos.
