DHQ Affirms Alleged Coup Plot, Officers To Face Military Trial

Deborah Akinyosoye

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that investigations into alleged misconduct by some military officers revealed claims of a plot to overthrow the government.

In October 2025, the DHQ announced the arrest of sixteen officers, ranging in rank from Captain to Brigadier General, over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations. Reports at the time linked the arrests to secret meetings allegedly aimed at toppling the government, and suggested the cancellation of the October 1 Independence Day parade was connected to the plot.

The former Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, had described the matter as an internal disciplinary issue.

On Monday, Major General Samaila Uba, the new Director of Defence Information, provided an update, saying a comprehensive investigation had been concluded in line with established military procedures.

He confirmed that some officers were found with cases to answer over allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, and the report has now been forwarded to the appropriate superior authority.

“The comprehensive investigation process, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, has carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel,” the statement read. “The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the AFN.”

Uba added that the indicted officers would be formally arraigned before relevant military judicial panels to face trial under the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.

He stressed that the process would uphold fairness and due process while ensuring accountability.
“The AFN reiterates that measures being taken are purely disciplinary and part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the ranks,” he said.

“The Armed Forces remain resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority.”

The DHQ statement indicates that the proceedings are intended to reinforce discipline within the ranks rather than address a criminal prosecution in the civilian courts.
