Como Beat Genoa To Keep Up Champions League Bid

Como kept their historic push for UEFA Champions League qualification alive with an impressive 2–0 victory over Genoa on Sunday, tightening the race for a top-four finish in Serie A.

Goals in each half from Tasos Douvikas and Assane Diao secured a deserved win at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, lifting Como back into fifth place—just two points behind Juventus, who currently occupy the final Champions League spot.

The visitors started brightly and showed clear intent, dominating possession and creating the better chances early on. Their persistence paid off when Douvikas rose highest to head home the opener, giving Como a vital first-half lead. The goal settled the team and allowed them to control the tempo against a Genoa side that struggled to respond effectively.

After the break, Como maintained their discipline and attacking threat. Diao doubled the advantage with another well-taken header, effectively putting the game beyond reach and capping off a confident performance from the ambitious lakeside club.

The result marks an important return to form for manager Cesc Fàbregas’ side, who had seen their momentum stall in recent weeks. Once considered favourites to claim the final Champions League spot, Como had taken just one point from their previous three matches, allowing Juventus to overtake them in the standings.

Sunday’s win not only revives their campaign but also piles pressure on Juventus, who face a crucial clash against AC Milan at the San Siro. That fixture could prove decisive, with both teams battling for a place in Europe’s elite competition.

Adding further intrigue to the race, AS Roma sit level on points with Como, making the fight for fourth place one of the tightest in recent Serie A seasons.

For Como, the stakes are particularly high. The club has never competed in European competition, and qualification for the Champions League would represent a historic milestone. Despite their recent struggles, including a painful Italian Cup exit to Inter Milan earlier in the week, this victory signals renewed belief within the squad.

Meanwhile, attention will also turn to Inter Milan’s league campaign, as the reigning champions look to edge closer to another Serie A title with a positive result against Torino.

With only a handful of matches remaining, the battle for Champions League qualification is set to intensify, and Como’s resurgence ensures they remain firmly in contention for a place among Europe’s elite.
