The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has faulted the opposition summit held in Ibadan on Saturday, describing participants as lacking the capacity to offer credible leadership or challenge the ruling party.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the party said the meeting, convened by Governor Seyi Makinde, posed no political threat to President Bola Tinubu or the APC.
According to the party, the opposition figures who attended the gathering do not have the cohesion or political strength required to unseat the current administration in future elections.
“There is nothing about the assembly that should worry anyone in our party. Those involved have consistently shown a lack of seriousness and direction when it comes to national leadership,” the statement read.
The APC further criticised Governor Makinde’s role in hosting the summit, accusing him of aligning with politicians it described as having poor records in governance.
“It is surprising that individuals with questionable political track records now seek to position themselves as a credible alternative. The contradictions within their ranks are evident,” the party added.
The opposition summit, tagged a national convergence of political parties, brought together key figures across different platforms to deliberate on strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among prominent attendees were former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Others included former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal, among several political stakeholders.
The APC also dismissed comments attributed to Governor Makinde regarding potential unrest, insisting that the 2027 elections would be conducted peacefully and in line with democratic standards.
It maintained that despite ongoing political alignments among opposition groups, the ruling party remains confident in its electoral prospects.
