Father in viral child abuse video needs therapy — Police

Deborah Akinyosoye

The Ogun State Police Command says medical professionals have recommended therapy for a commercial motorcyclist, Adekunle Odukaye, who was arrested for assaulting his three-year-old son, Boluwatife Odukaye, in the Oke Baale area of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.

It was reported that Adekunle’s arrest followed a manhunt launched by the command after a Facebook user, Adelere Rasaki, shared a video on Thursday showing him viciously kicking the young boy.

The distressing footage quickly gained traction, leading to widespread condemnation and calls for justice.

Following his arrest, Odutola stated that Adekunle and his son underwent medical assessment and clinical evaluation.

She added that, based on the assessment, medical professionals recommended therapy and rehabilitation for Adekunle.

The PPRO said, “Following swift action by the Sango Ota Divisional Police Officer, Mr Adekunle Odukaye was arrested and, upon interrogation, confirmed that he is the biological father of the child in the video.

“The command, in collaboration with medical professionals, ensured that Boluwatife Odukaye underwent a comprehensive medical examination, including a head scan and bone X-rays at a reputable hospital in Ikeja, Lagos, to assess any internal injuries sustained from the abuse.

“Furthermore, Mr Adekunle Odukaye has been subjected to a clinical evaluation, and professional assessments have recommended therapy and rehabilitation.”

She emphasised the command’s commitment to ensuring justice while calling for calm.

“The Ogun State Police Command remains committed to justice and child protection, and upon the conclusion of the investigation, the suspect will be charged to court for prosecution.

“The command acknowledges the public’s concern and emotional response to the video and assures everyone that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of the child. Members of the public and social media users are urged to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.

“We reaffirm our zero-tolerance stance on child abuse, domestic violence, and all forms of cruelty to minors. The Ogun State Police Command continues to work tirelessly to protect the vulnerable and uphold justice in our society,” Odutola concluded.
