Truth Unleashed: Verify Before You Share!

A Kayode Ajulo’s Reflection on Socratic Wisdom IV

In the grand tapestry of philosophy, Socrates shines as a beacon of wisdom, challenging us to question the very essence of our discourse. One of his numerous interventions was his three sieves, which serve not only as filters for conversation but also as profound lenses through which we can scrutinise our narratives, particularly in the vibrant context of contemporary African societies. As Socrates once said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Let us engage in this examination together.

Imagine, if you will, a bustling marketplace in Lagos, or an urban centre in Nairobi, where gossip and hearsay flourish amidst the vibrant exchanges of daily life. It is here, in this rich context of human interaction, that I urged that Socrates’ call to discernment must be heeded.

The First Sieve: Truth

In an era where information spreads faster than the wind, the pursuit of truth becomes paramount. Before sharing stories about our neighbours, associates, leaders, or fellow citizens, let us pause and ask ourselves: Is this information verified? In a continent where misinformation can lead to unrest, we must pursue the truth with relentless vigour. As Socrates wisely asserted, “To find yourself, think for yourself.” We need to be seekers of knowledge, not purveyors of unfounded claims.

The Second Sieve: Kindness

The second sieve invites us to reflect on the nature of our words. Are we sowing seeds of kindness or malice? In societies where unity is crucial, the language we choose can either build bridges or erect walls. Speaking ill of others, especially in ignorance, diminishes our collective spirit. Let us strive to uplift one another, embodying the wisdom of the saying, “Words are, of course, the most powerful and potent drug used by mankind.” There’s a need for kindness to reign in our discourse.

The Third Sieve: Usefulness

Finally, we must interrogate the usefulness of our words. Do they contribute to the betterment of our communities? In a continent brimming with potential, our narratives should inspire action and foster growth. Instead of indulging in gossip, knowledge that empowers, stories that educate, and truths that unite must be our focus. As Aristotle noted, “Art aims to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” Narratives with significance that add value must be our signatures.

A Call to Action

As we navigate the complexities of our world, let us embody the wisdom of Socrates. In a world that often appears divided, we hold the power to choose our narratives. We can cultivate a culture rooted in truth, kindness, and usefulness—principles that can guide not only our conversations but our actions.

In doing so, we honour the legacy of those who came before us and pave the way for future generations. We should engage in dialogues that elevate our communities, foster understanding, and inspire hope. As we embrace these tenets, we can transform not only our conversations but also our nations. Together, we rise to the challenge, becoming architects of a future where wisdom and compassion illuminate our paths.

Applying Socratic Sieves in Everyday Life

Incorporating Socrates’ three sieves into our daily interactions can significantly enhance communication and foster a more harmonious society. Here’s how we can apply each sieve practically in Nigeria:

  1. The First Sieve: Truth
  • Verify Before Sharing: Before passing along information—whether in person, on social media, or through community gatherings—take a moment to verify its accuracy. This could involve checking credible news sources or discussing with trusted individuals who can confirm the facts.
  • Encourage Critical Thinking: In schools and community groups, promote discussions that encourage critical analysis of information. Teaching young people to question and seek evidence empowers them to discern truth from misinformation.
  1. The Second Sieve: Kindness
  • Choose Your Words Wisely: In our daily conversations, let’s be mindful of the impact our words can have. Instead of engaging in gossip or negative talk about others, focus on sharing uplifting stories or constructive feedback.
  • Promote Positive Narratives: Use platforms—be it social media, community meetings, or local events—to highlight positive actions and achievements within our communities. This will create an environment where kindness is celebrated and malice is discouraged.
  1. The Third Sieve: Usefulness
  • Focus on Constructive Communication: When discussing issues, aim to provide solutions or actions that can benefit the community. Instead of merely complaining about a problem, propose a community initiative or encourage collective efforts toward improvement.
  • Engage in Community Development: Participate in local projects aimed at uplifting the community. Sharing knowledge, skills, or resources that contribute to the betterment of society exemplifies the usefulness of our words and actions.

Conclusion

By adhering to the above, we can nurture a culture of truth, kindness, and usefulness in Nigeria. This practice enhances our interpersonal relationships and strengthens the fabric of our communities, paving the way for a united and resilient society.

This is a call to commit to being ambassadors of Socratic wisdom, transforming our dialogue and, ultimately, our nation. In the words of Socrates, “An education is the best provision for old age.” Let us educate ourselves and one another with wisdom compassion and integrity.
