The verdict handed down by the Supreme Court on local councils financial autonomy has been upheld by the Senate.

Before the resolutions, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin had moved motions were separately seconded by Senator Abdul Ningi and Senator Tahir Monguno on the implementation of the Supreme Court judgement.
Senator Tony Nwoye ( LP Anambra North), had at the plenary informed that some state governments were plotting to circumvent the implementation of the judgement through counter laws by state House of Assemblies.
He alleged that some State Governors were using their House of Assembly to enact laws that would mandate respective local government councils in their states to remit money accruing to them from the federation account into State/Local Government Joint Account contrary to the judgement of the Supreme court.
