Onitsha Main Market Bows To Pressure As Traders Open For Business

Olayiwola Matthew

Traders at the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State on Monday caved in to the pressure by Governor Soludo and subsequently reopened the market fully.

Recall that the they have been observing the sit-at- home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra, until the governor threatened them last week to ignore the order or lose the market.

Even the counter order by IPOB for a Shutdown in the South East was not enough to remove the state government’s pressure as the marker was full and bubbling.

Market leaders explained that the decision to heed the governor’s order was driven by the need to safeguard livelihoods and sustain the commercial activities that support thousands of traders and workers in the area.

Many other traders expressed frustration over repeated sit-at-home directives, which they say disrupt the local economy and threaten the financial survival of families.

Security personnel were deployed across the market to ensure law and order while traders and customers to conduct transactions safely.

Walkways in the market was busy with people carrying goods and opening up for business.

There were signs of life even in some areas noted for silence.

Political observers have described the situation as a big win for Soludo.
