Oba Ladoja Describes Journey To Throne As “bumpy, Filled With Trials”

Deborah Akinyosoye

The Olubadan-elect of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has described his path to the throne as “bumpy, filled with trials, and only made possible by the grace of God.”

Addressing a large crowd of well-wishers at his Bodija residence in Ibadan on Monday, the former Oyo State governor reflected on a journey that spanned more than three decades through the intricate traditional chieftaincy hierarchy of Ibadanland.

“I never imagined destiny would call me to the throne at this time,” Oba Ladoja admitted, visibly moved as he recounted the moment he received news of the passing of his predecessor, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. “It came as a rude shock. I had envisaged that our king would still reign for another five to ten years,” he said.

Oba Ladoja, who began his traditional journey as Jagun Balogun Olubadan on October 1, 1993, rose steadily through the 36-step ladder of the Balogun line, a rigorous and time-honoured system that ultimately led him to his current position after over 31 years of dedicated service.

Reflecting on his early days in the chieftaincy, he recalled the significant figures who witnessed his elevation to Jagun, including the late MKO Abiola, the late Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, and several former governors and cultural icons.

“There were many coincidences,” he added. “I was born in 1944, and I am the 44th Olubadan. It reminds me that God’s plan is always perfect. Many of those who started this journey with me are no longer here. It’s been one of patience, perseverance, and grace.”

Upon his recent return to Ibadan after a two-month trip out of state, Oba Ladoja visited his ancestral home at Isale-Osi, in Ibadan South-West LGA, the very place where his path to the throne began. “That was where I went first, to pray and reflect. It felt like coming full circle,” he said.

He paid glowing tribute to the late Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin, whom he praised as “a monarch who upheld tradition with dignity,” and extended condolences to his family, the Olubadan-in-Council, and the entire Ibadanland.

The monarch-elect expressed deep appreciation to the Olubadan-in-Council, whose unanimous endorsement confirmed his nomination to ascend the throne. “If they didn’t approve my nomination, what could I do?” he said with humility. “I am grateful, and I assure them that our bond will only grow stronger.”

He added that he would soon begin consultations with key government and traditional stakeholders, including the Governor of Oyo State, Oluwo, and Araba of Ibadan, to finalise arrangements for his coronation.

Oba Ladoja appealed to all sons and daughters of Ibadan, both at home and abroad, to support him with prayers as he prepares to assume the enormous responsibilities of the ancient stool.

“I seek your prayers for God’s wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to guide me in the discharge of this sacred duty. I pray that my reign shall bring peace, prosperity, and progress to Ibadanland,” he declared.
