Nigerians To Pay $80 Duty On Every Package Sent To The US – NIPOST

Olayiwola Matthew

Nigerians will now pay a mandatory customs duty of $80 (or its naira equivalent) on every package sent to the United States, the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) announced on Friday, August 29. Letters and documents, however, will be exempt from the charge.

The agency explained that the policy follows a U.S. Executive Order that suspends de minimis exemptions for all postal shipments worldwide. These exemptions previously allowed low-value packages to enter the U.S. without customs duties.

“With effect from August 29, 2025, and in compliance with the Executive Order, all postal items to the United States—except for letters and documents—will now attract a prepaid customs duty of USD $80 (or its naira equivalent) at the point of acceptance in Nigeria,” NIPOST stated in a circular.

The agency further noted that global logistics operations have been disrupted as airlines and cargo carriers implement stricter handling measures for U.S.-bound shipments. This could result in longer transit and processing times, leading to possible delivery delays. Additionally, all packages will undergo enhanced Customs checks upon arrival in the U.S.

NIPOST said it is actively engaging with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and airline partners to minimise disruptions and ensure service reliability.

The announcement has sparked concern among frequent shippers, small businesses, and e-commerce operators in Nigeria, as the new fee could significantly increase shipping costs, particularly for small parcels and low-value goods.
