Niger State Youths Express Disappointment Over NCDC Board Appointment

By Awhawha Awhawha

The concerned youths and citizens of Niger State, North Central Nigeria, under the leadership of Ibrahim Ahmad Zuruk, National President of the Nupe Youth Development Association (NYDA), have expressed deep disappointment over the recently announced constitution of the Board and Management of the North Central Development Commission (NCDC).

While acknowledging that the long-anticipated appointments mark a critical step toward the operationalization of the NCDC, the group decried what they described as the gross underrepresentation of Niger State in the commission’s leadership.

According to the group, Niger State stood firmly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 general elections.

The people of the state came out in large numbers to support his candidacy and ultimately delivered one of the highest vote counts in the North Central region.

The support, they emphasized, was not based on sentiment but on a strong belief in his vision, competence, and proven track record.

“We believe and continue to believe in your promise of Renewed Hope,” the group said in a statement.

They further recalled that in the spirit of fairness and inclusion, they had advocated for the siting of the NCDC headquarters in Niger State, citing its strategic location, expansive landmass, long-standing neglect, and significant developmental needs. However, that appeal was not granted.

Despite that setback, the youths said they remained hopeful and requested that either the position of Board Chairman or Executive Director/CEO be allocated to an indigene of Niger State as a form of compensation and recognition.

To their dismay, neither position was awarded to the state. Instead, a non-executive director was appointeda role they acknowledged but noted holds limited executive power or influence within the commission.

“This has left our people feeling marginalized and disheartened,” the group stated.

They stressed that equity and fairness are foundational to national unity and peace, arguing that the people of Niger State like all citizens of the Federal Republic deserve fair representation in federal appointments, especially in institutions directly serving their region.

“Our appeal is not born out of entitlement, but is rooted in justice, fairness, and democratic participation,” they emphasized.

The group expressed confidence that President Tinubu, whose administration has consistently promoted inclusivity and equity, would address their grievance.

In conclusion, they respectfully urged the President to revisit the NCDC leadership appointments and take corrective measures to ensure that Niger State receives meaningful and deserved representation.

“We believe in your leadership and in your commitment to a just and equitable Nigeria. We trust that you will give this appeal the thoughtful attention it deserves.”
