The Lagos State Government has launched a planning committee to commemorate the life and legacy of the late Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the state government on its official social media handles.

The inauguration was performed on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu by the Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, at the Akran’s Palace in Jegba, Badagry.

It was stated that Sanwo-Olu charged members of the committee to approach their assignment with “unity, clarity of purpose, and a strong determination to deliver a unique, befitting, and memorable celebration in honour of the revered monarch.”

Salu-Hundeyin, who chairs the committee, expressed appreciation to the governor for the confidence reposed in its members.

She emphasised that Badagry holds a special place in the affairs of the state and called for maximum cooperation to deliver a historic celebration.

“She further underscored that every member of the Committee is important, in line with the inclusivity pillar of the THEMES Plus Development Agenda.

“According to her, the Committee’s resolutions and outcomes will be duly documented in the State Gazette, while all deliberations will be presented to the Governor for ratification,” the statement partly read.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Princess Adetola Akran-Oketunde thanked the governor for his continued support, describing it as a fitting tribute to the monarch’s legacy.

The inauguration and maiden meeting were attended by members of the committee, including local government chairmen, traditional and religious leaders, and the Lagos State House of Assembly member representing Badagry Constituency I, Hon. Solomon Bonu.

The Akran of Badagry, Wheno Menu-Toyi, passed away in January 2026 at the age of 89. The monarch, who reigned for 48 years, was a prominent voice in the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

Governor Sanwo-Olu had described his passing as a significant loss to Badagry, Lagos, and Nigeria, recognising his contributions to cultural preservation, unity, and the development of the ancient town.
