Dr. Gbenga Fasua, the newly elected chairman, Akure South Local Government, has begun work as he began the grading of a street, Oluwaseun Street, which was in a deplorable condition.
The street, which harbours the home of the mother of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, had for the past 30 years been abandoned and became impassable for vehicles.
Fasua brought grader to the street on Thursday to do surface dressing to make it accessible and passable for vehicular movement as part of fulfilment of his electioneering promises.
Dr. Fasua is yet to be sworn in, explained that he noticed the deplorable condition of the road while going round during the campaign and promised the residents to fix road.
He told newsmen that q”I was informed of this road that it’s been for quite over 30 years that it had been abandoned. Of course, in our overview across the 11 wards, when we were campaigning, we went around these axis, I picked interest in this road.
“I’ve promised Akure South local government and the people that the best is what they will see.
“This is a tip of an iceberg. I’ve told them in the area of education, infrastructure, economy, youth inclusiveness and others they should expect transformation.
“This is not new to us. I’ve been a Secretary of a local government for two and a half years. I understand the pain of the people, and, of course, the bane of the people of this area, particularly Akure South local government.
“I’ve been a chairman transition committee for six months. I quite understand the demands of the people. We have organized what we call community engagement. And part of what this community requested for is that this road. And of course, that’s why we are here.”
The Councillor of Ward 4 of the local government, Akinsulu Oluwasina appreciated the chairman of the local government for choosing his Ward to start off the fulfilment of electioneering promises.
He assured the people of the local council that the chairman would fulfill all his electioneering promises with the support of all the Councillors.
Impressed by the development, the acting chairman of Landlord Association of the street, Mr. Omotoso said it was a grand breakthrough for the residents.
He disclosed that people living the street could not bring in their vehicles because of the condition of the road.
Mr. Omotoso said most residents parked their vehicles in the adjourning streets because the street was inaccessible.
A community leader, Olayinka Akosile expressed confidence that in the autonomy of the local government, saying with the way the new chairman of Akure South Local Government started, there would be tremendous development at the grassroots.
He said: “They are doing it like maybe they want to tar it. So well, I thank him, because it’s part of what he promised. The Akure people can testify to it now that this man, he really mean the business, I believe they will surprise Akure. He will perform like our former administration, because I cannot deceive you. “
