Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has said Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons, have what it takes to again lift the Women’s African Cup of Nations trophy.
The Super Falcons will confront the Morocco female national team in Saturday’s final game in Rabat.
Speaking after the weekly Prosperity Walk at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa, Governor Diri praised the performance of the country’s female team in the 2024 WAFCON.
He congratulated the team for reaching the final and expressed optimism that the girls would lift the trophy for the 10th time.
“Our Super Falcons are doing well in faraway Morocco. I commend them for their wonderful performance having gone through the group and the knockout stages to reach the final.
“On behalf of the government and people of Bayelsa State, I am rooting for our girls in Morocco to return with the trophy.
“They did it in the past, and having won it nine times, I believe they can achieve what the media has dubbed “Mission X,” which will make it the 10th WAFCON title for Nigeria,” the Bayelsa governor stated.
He said a government delegation, including the Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Daniel Igali, and chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Sports, Hon. Tare Porri, was in Morocco to cheer the girls to victory.
The Bayelsa governor equally applauded the state female football team, Bayelsa Queens, which are champions of the 2024/25 Nigerian Women Football League and would represent the country in the CAF Women Champions League.
Diri urged the team to prepare well for the CAF WAFU B Champions League qualifiers in order to emerge champions like they did in 2022.
The Bayelsa helmsman advised youths in the state to develop their God-given talent as government was willing to support them actualise their potential.
