Obi, others seek better approach to National Security

Former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, and key stakeholders have called for a more serious approach to national security, emphasizing its role as a cornerstone of development.

The call was made at the inauguration and lecture series organised by the League of Anambra Professionals (LAP), themed, ‘Technology and Innovation in Security Management: The Future of Policing’ in Anambra State. At the event, Obi underscored the importance of security as a prerequisite for national progress, urging all levels of government to prioritise security while simultaneously investing in education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.

“Security is a critical component of development. If you fail in securing your nation, you have failed,” Obi stated.

He emphasised that strategic investments in human capital development are essential for long-term security and economic stability.

“When you do that, it is critical. Everybody knows that there are trajectories that drive development. You must invest in it,” he added.

Delivering a lecture at the event, former head of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osita Chidoka, commended Anambra State’s new Homeland Security Law, describing it as a groundbreaking shift in security governance.

He explained that the law, introduced by Governor Charles Soludo, seeks to embed security within communities, ensuring both citizens and institutions play active roles in crime prevention.

“This law represents a move from traditional reactive security approaches to a more proactive strategy. One of its key provisions, clause 14, mandates tenant registration, which is crucial in tracking criminal activities,” Chidoka stated.

Citing recent crime statistics, Chidoka noted that while the South-East remains the safest region in Nigeria, Anambra has witnessed an increase in kidnappings, with high ransom payments due to the prominence of its victims.

“Between July 2023 and June 2024, Nigeria recorded 1,030 criminal cases, with 7,560 people abducted. Kidnappers demanded N10.9 billion in ransom but received only N1.05 billion, about nine per cent of the total demand,” he revealed.

He urged for the adoption of a coordinated, data-driven intelligence network, stressing that security is not just about weapons and surveillance but also community engagement.

Soludo, represented by his Special Adviser on Security, AVM Ben Chiobi (rtd), underscored the need for technology-driven surveillance and identity management.

“Knowing your neighbour, tracking hotel guests, and integrating these measures with technology will significantly enhance security,” Soludo stated.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the Homeland Security Law 2025, which provides a comprehensive framework for tackling security challenges in the state.

Newly inaugurated LAP President, Sir Nnamdi Obi, stressed that addressing security concerns requires collective effort.

“Security is not a one-man job. It demands collaboration from every resident, institution, and stakeholder,” he said.
