Why I Don’t Sign Artistes – Tiwa Savage

Olayiwola Matthew

Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has explained why she doesn’t sign artists.

The “Water and Garri” hitmaker singer stated in an interview with Forbes Africa that she does not believe she has the “gift” of signing up-and-coming artists.

The 45-year-old singer also revealed that she may not be able to regulate their behaviour because it is a “stressful” responsibility.

She did, however, add that she would prefer to establish a music school where up-and-coming vocalists might receive instruction before eventually landing a record deal.

“Everyone always says to me, ‘when are you going to sign an artiste?’ I don’t think I have the gift to sign another artiste, because artistes are stressful. I could just be sleeping, and then I will wake up and my artist is trending for something else,” Tiwa said.

“But I do have the gift to help, which is why I am trying to do the music school, where you can go and later sign to a label that can actually help you.’’

Savage rose to prominence after releasing her breakout single ‘Kele Kele Love’ in 2010.

In a different story, Tiwa Savage discussed her feelings about the criticism she receives for her style choices due to her age.

During a recent podcast appearance, Savage voiced her displeasure with the ongoing criticism she encounters because of her age.

The 44-year-old singer said she frequently receives criticism for her wardrobe choices, with some people arguing that she ought to wear more modestly given her advanced age.

Tiwa Savage, on the other hand, noted that Beyoncé and other female celebrities in their 40s are frequently praised for their beauty and sense of style, despite their advanced age.

“They age-shame me every single day. They say, a woman of you age, how can you be wearing a bikini? I can because I have a body.

“Beyoncé is in her 40s and wears bikinis but Americans don’t age shame her. They would be like, for her age, black don’t crack. It’s more celebrated when you look good in your older age.

“But they [Nigerians], always throw these things like, when her son grows up, he’s going to see this. My son is going to be like, my mum is a powerful and beautiful woman.”
