Insecurity: FG Seeks Citizens’ Support, Cautions Against Misinformation

Fatimah Otunsanya

The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to stand firm against division and misinformation as the country intensifies efforts to confront terrorism, banditry, and other security threats.

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stressed the need for unity at a time when enemies of the nation are working to destabilise the country.

“Our common enemies are terrorists, bandits, and criminals seeking to destabilise our nation.

“At this critical time, it is imperative for all Nigerians to stand as one. We must reject misinformation and division,” Idris said.

He cautioned against attempts to frame recent attacks in religious terms, describing such narratives as false and harmful.

“The government categorically refutes any characterisation of this situation along religious lines.

“These claims are not only factually inaccurate but are dangerously counterproductive to the national unity required to overcome our shared challenges,” the minister stated.

Idris also conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s condolences to families affected by recent violent incidents, including the killing of a high-ranking Army General, the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi, and an attack on a church in Kwara State.

“These heinous attacks only strengthen the resolve of the Federal Government to deal a permanent blow to terrorism,” he said.

He revealed that President Tinubu has placed the nation’s security apparatus on “the highest alert ever” and postponed his participation in the G20 meeting in South Africa to focus on the domestic security situation.

Similarly, NigeriaTodayTimes reported earlier that the Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently in Birnin Kebbi to meet state authorities, community leaders, and families of the abducted students.
