The Enugu State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that the residence of Frank Mba, deputy inspector-general of police (IGP), in Ezimo, Udenu LGA, was attacked.
On Sunday, reports surfaced alleging that gunmen suspected to be kidnappers stormed Mba’s home in Enugu and killed a police officer on duty.
In a statement, Daniel Ndukwe, spokesperson of the command, described the reports as false.
He clarified that there was no attempt to kidnap the IGP’s parents or relatives, contrary to a viral social media post.
According to Ndukwe, at about 8pm on September 18, police operatives on routine patrol in the Ezimo community responded to a distress call and foiled an armed robbery attempt.
“Sadly, a police officer who sustained gunshot injuries during the ensuing shootout later died in the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the attending doctor,” the statement reads.
“Meanwhile, one male suspect has been arrested and is assisting the police in the ongoing discreet investigation and manhunt for the fleeing suspects.”
The spokesperson added that Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commissioner of police, has urged operatives to build on the lead already established in tracking down the suspects.
“He reiterates the unwavering commitment of the Command to combating isolated cases of violent crimes in Enugu State,” the statement reads.
